The Prairie Winds Trilogy, by Stephanie Grace Whitson, chronicles the life of Jesse King, a pioneer woman who is captured by the Lokota Sioux on a Nebraska prairie. At first she wonders how she will ever survive, let alone adapt to this new life among Indians. As she becomes more at home within this strange but beautiful new culture she prays for her faith to sustain her and for her faith to remain strong.Soon “she discovers God’s tender mercies in her friendship with an Indian woman and in her love for the Sioux brave, Rides the Wind.”As she begins to feel a part of the tribe, Jesse’s heart begins to feel divided. She longs for her old life, yet more and more she embraces the new one she had not sought out but is falling in love with.
Walks the Fire, book one in the series, will take you on an adventure of a young woman of faith who finds herself in a very strange yet exhilarating new mission field where God take root and grows in the hearts of a people who formerly had no knowledge of Him.The exciting saga continues in Soaring Eagle and concludes in Red Bird.In the early 1990s the author and her family moved to a rural homestead in Nebraska and the “story of Jesse King was inspired by the lives of pioneers laid to rest in an abandoned cemetery adjacent to the Whitson property.”If you are a fan of Janette Oke’s American West historical novels The Prairie Winds Trilogy will undoubtedly interest you.
